If you keep personal data on your PC that is important to you then you need to ensure that this data is regularly backed up. You never know when your computer Hard Drive is going to fail.  Alternatively, your PC might be stolen or it might be destroyed by fire or lightening.  Manually saving your data to an external media device such as Portable Hard Drive or USB Flash Drive will surffice, ideally you should have two external media devices, one on-site, one off-site then rotate the on-site, off-site devices on a regular basis. The golden rule is "your important data in TWO places at all times" This totally maunal backup solution, off course relies on you ensuring that you regularly make the time to run the backups. We normally recommend to our business clients that we fully auotmate the backup process for them. We achieve this by installing software that takes a daily snapshot of the computer's Hard Drive. This is called a 'Bare Metal Recovery' solution as the snapshot can be used to completely restore your PC (down to the last byte) to its orginal pre-distaster condition.   Plus it is easy to extract from the backup snapshot and individual files that have become corrupted or have been accidently overwritten/deleted.
